What is Human Design?

Why bother reading this?

Are you tired of struggling and pushing yourself to get what you want?

You’re probably swimming upstream towards your goals without realizing it. Stressing yourself out with (unrealistic) to-do lists. Then hitting your head against the wall in the middle of a meltdown, wondering….when. will. i. finally. get. it?

Human design can show you an easier way to get things done.  Some coaches may tell you to read “Do the Work” and learn to push through your “resistance”. Not me – I prefer a more self-compassionate approach.

What if resistance isn’t something to fight against? What if it’s there to share valuable information that will guide you closer towards what you really want? If you treat resistance like an enemy you need to defeat, you may end up depleted and frustrated with your results. Is that what you’ve been doing?

You’re spiritually conscious.

You know that you’re a spiritual being having a human experience. (Or a spiritual being having a spiritual experience depending on your preference.)

You understand that your imperfections are perfectly divine.

But translating this knowledge into your everyday life?

Whole different story.

Human design can shed light on what brings out your inner three-year old and why.  And how to plug into your built-in Buddha and pull yourself together.

Are you at peace with who you are and where your life is right now?

One of my classmates (an astrologer) once said:  “You are the answer to the question the Universe was asking at the moment of your birth.”  Beautiful thought, right?

Yet I’ve spent most of my life thinking there was something wrong with me that I needed to fix.  I’m too sensitive.  Too emotional.  Too naive.

So I devoured personal healing work with the same passion my sister uses to sift through shoe stores. (Just so you understand the level of passion I’m talking about, you should know she ran a blog called Shoe Porn.)

I challenge you to name a healing tool I haven’t read about, tried or been certified in.  And still the inner peace I was searching for kept eluding me for years.  Granted I made progress. I grew.  I dissolved huge chunks of trauma and felt my load lighten over the years.

But I didn’t start to really sink into myself until I had my first human design reading.

Now I’ve had readings before.  Everything from intuitive to numerology to astrology.  (Vedic. Chinese. And Western, thank you very much.) The human design reading was different for me. Something clicked.  I stopped fighting against the current of who I was and just relaxed into the limitations and possibilities of my design.

The more I studied human design, the deeper my relief grew.

Human Design gave me permission to accept myself.  Flaws and all.

As a parent it helped me understand my son’s mysterious moods and annoying  unique habits.

Right now I’m experimenting with using it to end the (almost) decade-long drama between me and my son’s father.  (Stay tuned!)

Human Design has been a liberating tool in my life and it can do the same for you.

Human Design can help you create inevitable success:

  • human design can give you deep insight about yourself.    it can:
  • teach you how you’re designed to use your energy to create the life you want
  • uncover unconscious behavior patterns getting in your way
  • shed light on your particular flavor of self-sabotage so you can prepare for it and neutralize it before it strikes
  • reveal why certain motives and urges run your life
  • give you specific knowledge about your talents, vulnerabilities, and unique dynamics when dealing with others

After a reading, you’ll…

  • understand how to create a plan that’s right for you
  • trust yourself to make the right decisions for your life
  • say goodbye to self-doubt and hello to full self-acceptance
  • save time on your inner work by focusing on the key areas revealed in your reading
  • fully trust your power to know what’s right for you
  • get to your goals sooner
  • have the confidence to make your dreams real
  • truly be able to not take other people’s actions personally

Right now you’re probably wondering…

What is human design?

Human Design is a unique, personality assessment tool-  that integrates astrology, the kabbalah, the chakra system and I-Ching – to uncover your unique energetic blueprint.  Human design readings show you how you’re wired to make decisions, process information and affect the world around you.

Human design gives you insight into how your inner navigation system works.  Imagine finally being able to trust your unique way of knowing what’s right for you.

No more second guessing.  Beating yourself up for taking a left turn instead of a right.  Or doubting yourself and needing outside validation before you can choose your next step.

How does it work?

Your human Design reading is based on a body graph which is a chart generated using your birth information (date, time and place).

Let me break down what you’re looking at:

There are nine energy centers.  Each center carries and manages energy related to specific themes in our lives. They are:

  1. The Throat Center:  Rules expression, talking and action.
  2. The Heart Center:  Holds the energy of will power and courage.
  3. The Ji Center:  Corresponds with the heart chakra and holds our connection to the Divine, beauty and love.
  4. The Solar Plexus Center:  Acts as a motor of emotional energy and is related to excitement, passion, pain, guilt, grief, joy and everything in between.
  5. The Sacral Center:  Related to our life force and sexuality.  It is the body’s power center and generator.
  6. The Spleen Center:  Rules sensory awareness, well-being and health.
  7. The Root Center:  Corresponds to the root chakra and is related to survival and drive.
  8. The Ajna Center:  A mental awareness center related to our capacity to analyze and conceptualize information.
  9. The Head Center:  The source of inspiration that fuels conceptualization.

Now you’ll notice some of the energy centers are colored in and others are white.  The colored in centers are defined centers and the blank ones are undefined or open.

What are defined centers?

A defined center lets you know that the particular characteristics of that center’s energy are stable within a person and they have a specific way of processing that kind of energy in their life.

For instance…

In my chart, my solar plexus is defined.  Learning that gave me room to finally understand my emotional nature.

Having a defined solar plexus gives me access to a level of emotional awareness someone with an undefined solar plexus center doesn’t have access to.  (This shed so much light on my failed relationship with my son’s father. His emotional center is undefined.)

My chart explains why I’m the shoulder to cry on for friends, families and even strangers.

And more importantly learning about my solar plexus definition taught me to stop fighting my emotions and refrain from making decisions in the midst of an emotional storm.  Instead, it’s best for me to just ride emotional roller coaster out then trust the clarity I will find when it’s over.

What about undefined centers?

Undefined  or open centers on the other hand, signify centers where you don’t determine how the characteristics of that energy are expressed in your life.

Undefined centers can often be your greatest teachers and source of wisdom because your understanding and experience of the energy of that center may be unlimited; you’ll be able to process that center’s energy in many, many different ways.

Undefined centers also tend to be reactive, protective, insecure and over-compensating.  Undefined centers are conditioned (or trained how to respond unconsciously) by defined energy centers around us.

We can be conditioned by other people or transits of the planets.  By learning to be aware of ourselves and notice our reactions we can learn to consciously choose how we respond to the energy around us.

For instance…

My heart center is undefined.  You may remember, the heart center is related to courage, the will and material support.

One of the gifts of an undefined heart center is that I don’t have a fixed way of thinking about material things and therefore have the opportunity to become wise about what is truly valuable in life since I’m open to learning about this energy from different viewpoints.

On the other hand, with an undefined heart center I’m also vulnerable to feeling defensive and falling prey to a strong desire to prove that I’m right.  If I engage in these reactive feelings, I’m entering a battle I will never win.  Nothing I do or say will remove the tension or discomfort I may be experiencing in this center.

Instead, I can learn to discern when the conditioning I’m receiving in this area feels like love and recognize the tension as the insecurity energy that’s conditioning me.

Are you designed To Do or To Wait?

We live in a “Just do it!” world.

We’re taught that if you want something, you move, act and make it happen.  No pain, no gain.

However, human design reveals that there are actually two ways that we can create things.

One way is To Do – which we are all familiar with.
Only 40% of the world is wired to create in this way.  Which means that most of the world is trying to make things happen in a way that’s counter to how they’re designed.

Most of us are swimming upstream and wondering why it’s so hard to move forward.

The other way to create is To Wait.  I prefer to refer to this mode as To Prepare.   Rather than being in constant motion moving towards what you want, for people who are designed To Wait a better strategy is to trust that what they want or need to move towards what they want is on its way to them.  In the meantime, they should focus on preparing for its arrival.  When people designed To Wait get caught up in  a lot of action in attempt to move forward, they end up with a lot of sweat and tears shed with little (if any) results to show for it.

It’s so much easier when you go with the flow.  You can wait (without guilt or “procrastination”) and receive the information you need.  Then take inspired action instead of fearful, reactive, frustrated action.

How do you really get in the flow?

When you allow your energy to flow freely through you, you experience more flow in your life.  Human design reveals the centers where we may be prone to be protective and constrict which slows down the flow of energy through us.

Human design also sheds light on our unique way of tapping into our inner authority – our inner knowing of what’s good and right for us.  Children are a great example of what it looks like to be in tuned with your inner authority.  They are very clear about what they want and what’s not working for them.  Between our parents and school, most of us were forced to rely more on our minds alone to figure things out.  We learned to look outside of ourselves for signs about what to do.

When we do this, we tend to base our interpretations on past experiences and knee-jerk reactions.  So we keep reliving past traumas until we heal the hurt and change the filter we interpret our experiences through.

Human design can help you streamline your healing by uncovering how you’re designed to access your inner authority.  This way rather than having to rely on the finicky mind, you can access the wisdom from the wisest part of yourself.
